What is a Canada eTA?
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air.
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a streamlined entry requirement introduced by the Government of Canada for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to or transiting through Canada by air. This digital authorization is electronically linked to your passport and significantly simplifies the travel process for eligible visitors.
An eTA is mandatory for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. However, it's important to note that you don't need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including cruise ship. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, and permanent residents of Canada cannot apply for an eTA and must travel with proper identification documents.
Who Needs a Canada eTA?
You need an eTA if you're a visa-exempt foreign national and you're flying to or transiting through Canada. Citizens from visa-exempt countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, and many others require an eTA. United States citizens are exempt from the eTA requirement but must carry proper identification such as a valid U.S. passport.
Application Requirements
Applying for a Canada eTA is a straightforward process that can be completed entirely online. You'll need a valid passport from a visa-exempt country, a valid email address to receive communications and your eTA confirmation, and a credit or debit card for the application fee payment. The application typically takes only a few minutes to complete, and most applicants receive their eTA approval via email within minutes, though processing can take up to 72 hours in some cases.
Validity and Multiple Entries
Once approved, your eTA is valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. With a valid eTA, you can travel to Canada as many times as you wish during this period. Each stay can be up to six months, making it ideal for tourists, business travelers, and those visiting family. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport, so you don't need to print any documents – just present your passport when checking in for your flight.
Important Considerations
While an eTA allows you to travel to Canada, it doesn't guarantee entry. Border services officers may ask to see other documents, such as proof of funds, return ticket, or invitation letters. Additionally, if you get a new passport, you'll need to apply for a new eTA as it's linked to your passport number. The eTA is different from a visa – if you're from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada, you'll need to apply for a visitor visa instead of an eTA.
